Office of Bushfire Risk Management established under FESA CEO. Assistance up to $190,000 available for victims. All 10 recommendations of Mick Keelty's report to be urgently implemented. Premier Colin Barnett today tabled in State Parliament Appreciating the Risk - The Report of the Special Inquiry Into the November 2011 Margaret River Bushfire. Mr Barnett said the State Government would establish a new Office of Bushfire Risk Management to oversee changes to the prescribed burns program following the release of the report. Gazetted fire districts in South-West: Area broadly bounded from Redgate to Witchcliffe to Cowaramup to Gracetown; Area broadly bounded from Busselton to Vasse to Smith's Beach; Augusta and the strip adjoining Bussell Highway north to Karridale. These gazettals mean FESA (either through a career Fire and Rescue Service station or a volunteer Fire and Rescue Service Brigade) becomes the hazard management authority within the boundaries of the gazetted district and will have direct responsibility for primary response. State Emergency Management Committee, chaired by Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan, will oversee the implementation by DEC of the recommendations. "Environment Minister Bill Marmion has directed DEC to temporarily suspend further burns within five kilometres of town sites and rural subdivisions until a complete risk assessment is undertaken. The Erickson Air-Crane will be operational in WA this summer; State Govt's $12.8m spend to secure a strong aerial fleet for bushfire season; Western Australian fire crews will be well-supported during the fire season with the arrival of one of the world's biggest rotary water bombers - the Erickson Air-Crane - which can drop up to 9,500 litres of water in a single load. Emergency Services Minister Troy Buswell said the State Government acted on the advice of the Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) and the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) to secure use of the biggest rotary water bomber to be stationed in WA. "Firefighters face a challenging and demanding season and the aircrane is a welcome addition to the State's aerial fleet, supporting fire crews to protect local communities," Mr Buswell said. Environment Minister Bill Marmion welcomed the arrival of the Erickson Air-Crane and said it would play an important role in bushfire suppression. The aircrane, nicknamed 'Marty,' delivers almost 114,000 litres of foam mix, retardant or water an hour; WA's aerial fire fighting fleet includes the aircrane; two Type 1 water bombers (4,000 litres per load); four Helitacs (1,000 litres per load); eight fixed-wing water bombers; an aerial intelligence helicopter; two ignition and one air attack aircraft; and nine fire spotting planes; In 2010-11 the fleet released nearly four million litres of water and foam on bushfires throughout the State in nearly 2,800 drops; More information about how to make a bushfire survival plan and what to do if a bushfire occurs is available at www.fesa.wa.gov.au.

| Water Minister Bill Marmion officially opened the Southern Seawater Desalination Plant (SSDP) three months ahead of schedule and within the $955million budget. The plant, near Binningup in the State's south, will provide up to 50 billion litres of freshwater into the Integrated Water Supply Scheme (IWSS) each year. "This breaks a long tradition of reliance on our dams and groundwater supplies, which have been suffering due to lower than average rainfall," Mr Marmion said. "The plant has already started supplying water into the IWSS and will reach its full capacity within about a year." [Note: Full screen quality available by clicking the square in the video viewer]

| Work will begin immediately to double the capacity of the Southern Seawater Desalination Plant (SSDP) to provide 100 billion litres of drinking water a year, securing future water needs for communities stretching from Perth to the Goldfields. Water Minister Bill Marmion said that when the expanded plant was completed, half of the water needed annually to supply Perth and surrounding areas would be supplied from climate independent sources. "Expansion of this plant using the existing team of contractors and engineers is both cost and time effective," Mr Marmion said. "I am delighted to see the first stage of the SSDP reaching a successful conclusion and I am confident this much-needed new water source will ensure Perth's water future." Minister Marmion responds to questions from the media. [Note: Full screen quality available by clicking the square in the video viewer]
