Onslow residents have a secure place to shelter from cyclones thanks to a $7million State Government Royalties for Regions investment, which has funded the building of a multipurpose facility that doubles as a major recreation and community centre. Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the facility was designed for its dual purpose and was an important part of the long-term strategy to create sustainable communities in the Pilbara. Speaking in Port Hedland, Mr Grylls said the freeing-up of the 75ha East Port Hedland site for residential development was among the most significant announcements yet in the State Government's Pilbara Cities vision. Mr Grylls said that this major relocation project, which would be funded through the State Government's Royalties for Regions program and the Water Corporation's capital works program, was particularly significant because the development potential in this area of Port Hedland had been constrained by the treatment plant's location.
