Office of Bushfire Risk Management established under FESA CEO. Assistance up to $190,000 available for victims. All 10 recommendations of Mick Keelty's report to be urgently implemented. Premier Colin Barnett today tabled in State Parliament Appreciating the Risk - The Report of the Special Inquiry Into the November 2011 Margaret River Bushfire. Mr Barnett said the State Government would establish a new Office of Bushfire Risk Management to oversee changes to the prescribed burns program following the release of the report. Gazetted fire districts in South-West: Area broadly bounded from Redgate to Witchcliffe to Cowaramup to Gracetown; Area broadly bounded from Busselton to Vasse to Smith's Beach; Augusta and the strip adjoining Bussell Highway north to Karridale. These gazettals mean FESA (either through a career Fire and Rescue Service station or a volunteer Fire and Rescue Service Brigade) becomes the hazard management authority within the boundaries of the gazetted district and will have direct responsibility for primary response. State Emergency Management Committee, chaired by Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan, will oversee the implementation by DEC of the recommendations. Appreciating the Risk - The Report of the Special Inquiry Into the November 2011 Margaret River Bushfire available at www.publicsector.wa.gov.au/.

261,987 students begin lessons at more than 770 public schools across WA. $1million new iPad initiative to spark literacy and numeracy learning. As almost 262,000 students begin lessons at public schools across Western Australia, some of the smallest children are set to use touch technology to boost their literacy and numeracy skills. Premier Colin Barnett and Education Minister Liz Constable announced a new Early Childhood iPad Initiative would provide nearly 900 iPads for Year 1 and 2 classes in 17 schools, and two mentor schools that have previously participated in a pilot iPad program. Speaking at West Beechboro Primary School, which will receive 55 iPads, Mr Barnett said Western Australia's achievements in the recent National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests had resulted in the State receiving additional funding for learning programs. "Western Australian teachers are tailoring programs to suit individual students, right from the moment they arrive at pre-primary," Mr Barnett said. Four new public schools worth $56million open today. Malvern Springs and Aveley Primary Schools in Ellenbrook, Piara Waters Primary School north of Forrestdale and Meadow Springs Primary School north of Mandurah. 73 schools begin as Independent Public Schools, taking the total to 171 schools. West Beechboro Primary School is one of these. List of schools participating in the Early Childhood iPad Initiative: Aubin Grove Primary School (mentor school); Baler Primary School; Bullsbrook District High School; Campbell Primary School; Cassia Primary School; Currambine Primary School; Forrestfield Primary School; Grovelands Primary School; Hilton Primary School; Kalgoorlie Primary School; Maddington Primary School; Manjimup Primary School; Parkfield Primary School; Seaforth Primary School; Settlers Primary School (mentor school); South Hedland Primary School; Tranby Primary School; West Beechboro Primary School and; Yakamia Primary School.

Premier breaks ground on new children's hospital site. Construction on track for completion in 2015. Set to become part of major health precinct for West Australians of all ages. Premier Colin Barnett and Health Minister Kim Hames officially broke ground on the construction site of Western Australia's $1.2billion new children's hospital on the grounds of Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre site, Nedlands. The John Holland Group was awarded the Stage One Managing Contract to design and build the new facility. The Liberal-National Government has already set aside $575million towards the cost of the new children's hospital - now almost half pre-paid. The name of the new hospital has yet to be decided, however it will not be Princess Margaret Hospital for Children. Visit www.newchildrenshospitalproject.health.wa.gov.au/ for more information.
