Demolition of Perth Entertainment Centre completed on schedule. State Government approves plans for new development on the site. Progress of Perth City Link on track and on schedule. The State Government has granted approval for the first private development of the Perth City Link marking another key milestone in delivery of the project. Planning Minister John Day said approval had been granted to Leighton Properties, on behalf of Seven Entertainment Pty Ltd, for an 11-storey office and retail building to be developed on the former Perth Entertainment Centre site. Lend Lease wins a highly competitive bid process. Riverside project to transform city's eastern gateway. Riverside, Waterfront and Perth City Link set to revitalise CBD. The State Government announced that Lend Lease had been selected as the preferred proponent to develop a premier riverfront site in East Perth. Planning Minister John Day said the four-hectare Waterbank site - a key precinct in the Riverside project - is already transforming Perth's eastern gateway. Works are already under way at Waterbank to prepare the site for future development. Lend Lease will take occupancy of the site and commence building works in 2013. Culture and the Arts Minister John Day launched the program of outdoor concerts, world-class exhibitions, art, films, street theatre, and more than 70 free activities that will transform the city as part of the Commonwealth Festival Perth. Mr Day said the eight-day festival - to be held alongside the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in October - would put Western Australian talent on display as well as celebrate the people and cultures of the Commonwealth. "The Perth Cultural Centre and surrounding venues will be transformed into a hive of free events and activities for West Australians and visitors to enjoy during CHOGM," he said. "Artists and performers from Australia and 16 Commonwealth countries such as India, South Africa, Barbados, Singapore, New Zealand and the United Kingdom will help the Perth Cultural Centre become the People's Space. The State Government has called for expressions of interest in purchasing land in the Perth City Link - the most significant inner-city development opportunity in more than a century. Planning Minister John Day said more than five hectares of prime land in the heart of the city was available for development to deliver a range of residential, commercial, retail and tourism facilities. "To meet the challenges of the fastest population growth in the nation, Perth must continue to provide new opportunities for people to live and work in the city," he said. "The Perth City Link project will fundamentally transform the heart of Perth by changing the orientation of the city to connect the CBD with the entertainment precinct of Northbridge. Famous artwork, including pieces by Andy Warhol, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, will form the first of six exclusive exhibitions from New York's world-renowned Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) following support from the State Government. Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the $6million funding, announced in the recent 2011-12 State Budget, would allow the Art Gallery of Western Australia to become the only Australian venue to host these MoMA exhibitions. "The partnership with New York's MoMA will give West Australians the chance to see exclusive highlights from this outstanding collection, many of which have never been seen outside the United States," Mr Day said. "The first large-scale exhibition - with a working title of 'Picasso to Warhol: Twelve Modern Masters' - will launch on June 16, 2012 and will feature more than 100 modern art masterpieces by 12 iconic artists of the 20th Century. The State Government's work to transform Perth through key urban renewal projects has received a funding boost in the 2011-12 State Budget. The Perth City Link project will receive funding of $56.8million in the next four years to help accelerate the development of the City Square to coincide with the completion of the underground rail and bus station. Planning Minister John Day said the funding was in addition to the $336.4million already earmarked for the rail and bus infrastructure and the $270million allocated to the Perth Waterfront project. Science and Innovation Minister John Day called for Western Australian inventors, industry, entrepreneurs and academia to enter the WA Innovator of the Year 2011 Awards. Mr Day made the call as he officially launched the State contribution to the Innovation Festival in front of an audience that included some of Western Australia's most influential innovators, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. "The innovation awards are designed to support industry development through a program that provided winners with both financial and tailored in-kind support," he said. "In the program's four years, more than 400 innovators have participated with many going on to successfully take their idea and turn it into a commercially viable business. The State Government has unveiled a significant collection of artefacts from four famous 17th and 18th century Dutch East India Company ships wrecked off the Western Australian coast. Culture and the Arts Minister John Day was joined by Netherlands Ambassador His Excellency Mr Willem Andreae to view the collection at the Western Australian Museum - Shipwreck Galleries, Fremantle. "This significant collection of artefacts - which was gifted to Australia by the Kingdom of the Netherlands - includes cannon and cannon balls, lead ingots, pottery, elephant tusks, amber and pitch, as well as rare objects owned by crew and passengers, including navigational instruments and ornaments," Mr Day said. - Western Australian Museum - Shipwrecks' Batavia Gallery

Detailed design plans for the much anticipated redevelopment of Perth Waterfront were released, alongside a commitment for project funding in this year's State Budget and confirmation that earthworks will start in early 2012. Construction is expected to take about 30 months with the project due to be completed in mid-2014. Premier Colin Barnett said Cabinet had approved $270 million funding for the Perth Waterfront Project in the 2011-12 State Budget.

Planning Minister John Day and Seven Group Holdings (Seven) chief executive officer Peter Gammell announced that demolition of the Perth Entertainment Centre will begin in early 2011. Mr Day said the Entertainment Centre, which has been vacant since 2002, sits on an integral area of land within the Perth City Link project which would reconnect the city centre with Northbridge for the first time in more than 100 years. "The State Government has reached an agreement with Seven that sets timeframes for the demolition and facilitates the land exchange necessary to deliver the Perth City Link project," he said. "The Entertainment Centre will begin to be demolished early next year which will enable the State Government to progress bus and rail infrastructure works."

The Perth Waterfront development has moved a step closer to reality with the commencement of a comprehensive geotechnical drilling and sampling program. Premier Colin Barnett and Planning Minister John Day visited the site and were briefed on the land-based and offshore work which had started around the Swan River foreshore. "I am pleased to see these critical works now under way on this priority project, which will assist Perth to mature as a vibrant, sophisticated capital city, providing an attraction for locals and tourists," Mr Day said. "Environmental and geotechnical investigations will be undertaken on The Esplanade Reserve, the foreshore and within the Swan River over a period of three months and this work will include soil, sediment and groundwater sampling.

The State Theatre Centre of Western Australia will open with a series of events in January 2011. Culture and the Arts Minister John Day announced the events today during a tour of the purpose-built performing arts facility in Northbridge. "The opening of the Centre will herald a new era for performing arts in Western Australia - it will provide a functional and inspiring venue for performers and audiences, and will also be a defining architectural landmark of the reinvigorated Perth Cultural Centre," Mr Day said.

Regional West Australians will be able to enjoy a performance from the world-renowned Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra close to home, with the State Government supporting a live simulcast from the Perth Concert Hall into regional centres. In a WA first, the orchestra's performance at 8pm on Sunday, November 14 will be broadcast simultaneously into the regions via the Westlink network, using high-quality video and audio technology. Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said regional communities would be able to enjoy this world-class concert, free-of-charge, at one of eight venues across WA.

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day today confirmed increased funding for local libraries would be included in the 2010-11 State Budget. Mr Day said it was always the Government's intention to maintain or increase library materials funding and he could make the announcement now the Budget allocation had been confirmed. He said the budgeting process had also revealed an underhanded move by the previous Labor government where it had secretly taken $4.355million from the WA Symphony Orchestra (WASO) accommodation fund.

Planning Minister John Day has released three major planning policy documents for public consultation. Directions 2031 is a new strategy for land-use planning which will shape the future of the Perth and Peel regions for the next 20 years. The Activity Centres Policy, which replaces the Metropolitan Centres Policy, redefines planning requirements for retail centres, with the aim of seeing centres evolve beyond retail experiences. The Minister also released the Southern Metropolitan and Peel-Sub-Regional Structure Plan.
