A new major training program for young doctors will ensure the State will have enough medical practitioners into the future, Health Minister Kim Hames said. Dr Hames said the new $75million program, to be spent over five years, would ensure sufficient doctors to staff new hospitals currently under construction, including the New Children's, Fiona Stanley and Midland hospitals. "This will also redress the shortage of GPs in Western Australia. We have the fewest GPs per population of any State," he said. Health Minister Kim Hames said the Four-Hour Rule Program was delivering on its goal of improving the quality of care for patients who needed unplanned or emergency treatment in Western Australia's public hospitals. "The results we are releasing today show that our hospitals have delivered strong results and I am very proud of what our staff have achieved," Dr Hames said. "What is also clear 18 months into the program is that there have been big increases in demand for our services. Delays in some key infrastructure projects have meant there are fewer beds than expected. In addition, the lack of GPs and aged care beds - both areas of Federal Government responsibility - are putting further pressure on the hospital system. As a result, I have been advised that there is a need to adjust the ambitious targets we set. [ Note: Full screen quality available, click the small white square in the video viewer. ]

| Health Minister Kim Hames today announced the names of 12 new roads and two conservation parks at the Fiona Stanley Hospital site. "The roads and parks in the new precinct are to be named after eminent West Australians from the health sector and Aboriginal names for local sites, medicinal plants and traditional healing methods," Dr Hames said. "These themes were suggested during a consultation process involving site neighbours, health organisations, health professional associations, community representatives and the cities of Melville and Cockburn. The $2billion Fiona Stanley Hospital will be WA's flagship hospital so it is fitting that six surrounding roads and one park are named after individuals who have made highly significant contributions to health care in the State.

The way information about vaccinations is recorded and collected would undergo a major overhaul in Western Australia following a review of the suspension of the State Government's free childhood seasonal influenza vaccination program. Health Minister Kim Hames tabled in State Parliament a review by Professor Bryant Stokes into the handling of the suspension of the State-based program, which provided free influenza vaccinations to children aged under five. Dr Hames said the review found the decision to suspend the program was correct and further analysis, both in WA and nationally, confirmed there was a particular problem with the CSL vaccine, Fluvax, which accounted for the majority of vaccines delivered in the age group.

The Government has decided this will be allocated to fund the construction of the new children's hospital at the QEII Medical Centre site. "This project was earmarked as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) where the private sector would fund construction of the hospital, and the State Government would lease it back," Dr Hames said.

Minister for Health, Dr Kim Hames, said the Education and Health Standing Committee was not an expert group and had made extraordinary connections and conclusions which were not based on sound or expert planning or data in its latest report. The Committee's "Designed to fail: Western Australia's Health System" report appeared to have several factual errors including the comments relating to reduced budgets, Dr Hames said. "For example, in the period since the Reid Report was completed in 2004 until 2008/09, State Government expenditure on health grew on average by more than 10 per cent each year, with State spending on Health remaining relatively constant at around 24 to 25 per cent of total Government spending," Dr Hames said.

The positive results were made public today by Health Minister Kim Hames with the release of interim figures for the Liberal-National Government's nation-leading Four Hour Rule Program which is being implemented across West Australian hospitals to improve the way patients received unplanned or emergency care.
