Western Australia's first on-shore carbon capture and storage (CCS) trial project will receive up to $52million to further promote the State's research in carbon emissions reduction. Mines and Petroleum Minister Norman Moore joined Federal Resources and Energy Minister Martin Ferguson for the funding announcement at the ARRC centre in Bentley. Mr Moore said the Federal Government Flagship funding would enable the Collie Hub project to move to the next phase of decision making. "This funding will further progress pre-competitive data acquisition and analysis of the potential storage area," he said. To ensure the community plays a critical role in the assessment and evaluation of the next phase, Mr Moore established the Lesueur Community Consultative Group (LCCG) which will report to him. Fisheries Minister Norman Moore has encouraged all interested parties to take the opportunity to comment on the Federal Government's draft Marine Bio-Regional Plan and draft Marine Reserve Network Plan for Commonwealth waters off the South-West coast. Mr Moore said the draft Marine Bioregional Plan intended to guide the Federal Government on key issues of environmental significance in the South-West bioregion, for consideration within the context of the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. "The draft Marine Reserve Network document includes proposed zones cover an area from Shark Bay in Western Australia's north through to South Australia's Kangaroo Island, between three and 200 nautical miles offshore, within which some forms of commercial and recreational fishing activity will be excluded," he said. The 90-day comment period ends on August 8, 2011, and the Minister said anyone with an interest in these waters should take advantage of this opportunity to have their say. The State's resources industry has surged almost 50 per cent in value since 2009 reaching a record $91.6billion in 2010. Figures recently compiled by the Department of Mines and Petroleum revealed iron ore remained Western Australia's most valuable resource, accounting for $48.5billion or 53 per cent of all mineral and petroleum sales in 2010. Mines and Petroleum Minister Norman Moore said strong demand, especially from China, underpinned the sector's continued record levels of iron ore shipments.

The Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) released new data aimed at encouraging long-term resources exploration in the State. Mines and Petroleum Minister Norman Moore said the new data was collected from recent regional surveys of the Eucla and the Capricorn Orogen (including the Gascoyne Province). Mr Moore said the GSWA's new data would be an important tool for industry. "The release of new data is great news. Studies such as these lessen exploration risk in remote, underexplored parts of WA and can encourage further exploration and future discoveries," he said.

Fishing, the lifecycle of the elusive Western Rock Lobster and the State Government and fishing industry's aim to sustainably manage and protect Western Australia's crayfish stocks help make up a new tourism venture. Tourism Minister Kim Hames and Fisheries Minister Norman Moore officially launched the Lobster Shack in the coastal community of Cervantes about 200km north of Perth. Dr Hames said the Lobster Shack, part of the Indian Ocean Rock Lobster company, would provide a significant boost to the existing tourism attractions of the Pinnacles National Park - located just 17km from Cervantes.
