The State Government has announced two major initiatives that will significantly strengthen security and reliability of energy supplies in Western Australia. Energy Minister Peter Collier said the Government had approved a long-term arrangement between Verve Energy and the APA Group that would lead to further development of the Mondarra Gas Storage Facility, near Dongara. In addition, the Independent Market Operator (IMO) has been selected to operate a Gas Bulletin Board (GBB) and develop a Gas Statement of Opportunities (GSOO) for WA. Mr Collier said both projects were key recommendations of the Gas Supply and Emergency Management Committee (GSEMC). [ Note: Full screen quality video ] |

A new $62million training facility in Northbridge will become the centrepiece for one of Western Australia's biggest State Training Providers. Officially opened by Premier Colin Barnett and Training and Workforce Development Minister Peter Collier, Central Institute of Technology's new building on Aberdeen Street is the final stage of the development of an extensive training precinct in the area. Covering 11,000 square metres, the building links all of Central's existing sites on Aberdeen and Newcastle streets, accommodating up to 26,000 students, and adds further value to the existing City of Perth cultural and education complex. The State Government has released a strategy that outlines an integrated and targeted approach to address a future skills shortage by supplementing Western Australia's skilled workforce. Training and Workforce Development Minister Peter Collier said the Western Australian Skilled Migration Strategy included a range of initiatives designed to augment the State's workforce with the skills that could not be met by the local labour force. "The State Government's top priority is to prepare West Australians for the workforce, by providing training opportunities and other strategies to help them fill high-skilled vacancies," Mr Collier said. Western Australia's top two indigenous students in public schools were awarded the 2010 Rob Riley Memorial Prize by Education Minister Liz Constable and Training and Workforce Development Minister Peter Collier. John Curtin College of the Arts graduate Billie Kickett-Morris and Belmont City College graduate Shannon Reynolds were awarded the prize during a special ceremony at The University of Western Australia (UWA). Dr Constable said the prize, named in honour of the late indigenous human rights advocate Rob Riley, was a fitting reward for the hard work and dedication shown by the two students. | Innovation in Western Australia's training system has been taken to the next level with the opening of a new aviation training facility at one of the busiest airports in the Southern Hemisphere. Training and Workforce Development Minister Peter Collier has launched the AeroSpace Training Centre at Jandakot airport, which would provide students with hands-on learning in the aviation industry. Operated by Polytechnic West, with industry support, the centre is housed in a refurbished hangar, with the capacity to train more than 300 students annually. Among the centre's new state-of-the-art equipment is an aircraft fleet comprising a Boeing 737 twin-jet, a Cessna 340, a Beech Baron and a Robinson R22 helicopter.

Energy Minister Peter Collier opened a 120 megawatt (MW) gas-fired power station in Kwinana that will help support renewable energy generation into the State's power grid. The dual-fuel Kwinana Swift Power Station, operated by Perth Energy, has quick response capabilities, taking just five minutes to reach full capacity. "This will assist with increasing Western Australia's capacity to manage intermittent power on the grid from renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar," Mr Collier said.

Energy Minister Peter Collier and Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls have celebrated the official launch of one of Australia's biggest wind farms. In Merredin today, the ministers took part in a ceremony to mark the start of Collgar Wind Farm's development, which will be Western Australia's biggest renewable energy project. Mr Collier said when completed, the project would increase the total renewable energy generation in the South West Interconnected System from five to almost nine per cent.

A trial of sophisticated new technology that will significantly transform the electricity system has been launched by the State Government in Perth's eastern region. Energy Minister Peter Collier today launched Western Australia's first roll-out of smart meters, which will provide valuable information to help inform decisions about the State's future energy direction. "Smart meters will ultimately enable customers to closely monitor their power consumption, allowing them to make more informed choices about their energy use," Mr Collier said. Premier Colin Barnett and Energy Minister Peter Collier today announced increases in the State's electricity retail tariffs and on the cap for gas tariffs. Householders could expect a 7.5 per cent rise in electricity prices from April 1, followed by a further 10 per cent on July 1, which is significantly lower than Budget assumptions for 2010 of 25.9 per cent. The average weekly cost increase for consumers would be $4.13 from July 1, but those facing financial hardship would pay an average of $2.78 more a week.

Energy Minister Peter Collier and Environment Minister Donna Faragher have announced the next stage in the development of a 5MW demonstration wave power station near Garden Island. Carnegie Wave Energy Limited today celebrated the installation of a mooring off Garden Island for a prototype CETO (wave energy converter) unit, which coincides with the official launch of the wave energy project. CETO technology is capable of converting wave energy into zero-emission electricity and also powering the desalination of water.

The State Government has conditionally agreed to build stage one of a major transmission line in the Mid-West, from Pinjar to Eneabba. This follows a formal review of the 330kV power line, also referred to as the North Country Reinforcement Project, which extends from Pinjar to Moonyoonooka (near Geraldton), after the initial cost estimates more than doubled - from $300million to $689million. |
