Motorists reminded to stick to speed limit. Speed kills average of 64 Western Australians a year. Western Australian motorists are being urged to do whatever they can to remind themselves and their loved ones to stick to the speed limit in a new advertising campaign starting February 4th, 2012. Police and Road Safety Minister Rob Johnson said the 'Post it notes' campaign featured drivers being reminded by post it notes, either written by themselves or by family members, why they should not speed. Mr Johnson said while WA Police was doing everything it could to stop people from speeding, motorists needed to take responsibility for their own driving behaviour and make a conscious effort to obey the speed limit. In 2010, speeding was a factor in 24 per cent of fatal crashes, 12 per cent of hospitalisation crashes and nine per cent of other crashes attended by WA Police. Campaign uses TV, radio and outdoor advertising across metro and regional WA. Trial started on Mitchell Freeway. Fixed cameras recommended by Professor Max Cameron to slow down motorists. Western Australia's first fixed speed camera was installed on the Mitchell Freeway in a bid to slow down speeding motorists and reduce the State's road toll. Police and Road Safety Minister Rob Johnson said the fixed camera would be placed northbound near the Karrinyup Road exit, with warning signs placed on the freeway and on ramps prior to the camera site. There will be no new cameras purchased for the project, only new cabinets from which the current fleet of mobile cameras can operate from intermittently. Both single or dual cameras can be operated from these fixed sites to allow both front and rear images to be captured of the same vehicle, which will ensure motorcycle rear plates are also captured. The installation of the six fixed cabinets is expected to be completed by June 2012.

- A safer community through access to information on sex offenders
Western Australian parents will be able to give better protection to their children by being able to access information on sex offenders living in their community under new laws proposed by the Liberal-National Government. Police Minister Rob Johnson said the legislation fulfilled an election promise and struck a balance between the rights of parents to access information to protect their children and the need to ensure good management of sex offenders by WA Police. Mr Johnson said the public would be able to access information about sex offenders through a website which would provide for three levels of disclosure about offenders. The Community Protection (Offender Reporting) Amendment Bill 2011 (No. 2) will be introduced into State Parliament week starting 7-Nov-2011.

Funding for road safety in Western Australia is set to reach record levels, with the State Government increasing the amount of speed camera revenue provided to the Road Trauma Trust Fund (RTTF) to two-thirds this year and to 100 per cent by July 2012. Currently, the RTTF receives one-third of revenue from speed and red light camera infringements. Road Safety Minister Rob Johnson said the decision was a huge win for road safety in WA. "I am immensely proud that we could achieve this outcome for road safety in WA and look forward to the challenge of ensuring this funding is invested for the benefit of all West Australians," Mr Johnson said. "Each year, approximately 200 people are killed and a further 2,800 are seriously injured on WA roads. "Apart from the emotional impacts on the families and friends of those involved, this road trauma results in a significant financial cost to our State. [ Note: Full screen quality video ] |

More than 330,000 West Australians are expected to tune in this Sunday to watch 'Enjoy the Ride,' a new road safety speeding campaign which will be screened across five television networks at 6.30pm. Road Safety Minister Rob Johnson said the campaign strategy signalled a new direction in educating motorists about speeding and would be supported by radio, outdoor and online advertising. Mr Johnson said the concept of a television 'roadblock' - when a commercial is broadcast simultaneously on television channels - had proved extremely successful in Victoria, with its road safety 'roadblock' commercial estimated to have reached a TV audience of one to two million people and attracted more than 12.3 million hits online. - http://www.enjoytheride.wa.gov.au/ [ Note: Full screen quality video ] |

Reported assaults against police officers have dropped by 28 per cent since the Liberal-National Government introduced mandatory sentencing legislation in September last year. Attorney General Christian Porter and Police Minister Rob Johnson said police statistics had revealed there were 969 assault offences against police from September 2009 to the end of August this year - 377 offences less than in the same period in 2008-09. "What we have seen is a rapid and remarkable reduction in the number of assaults against police and other officers that coincided with the introduction of mandatory sentencing last year," Mr Porter said.

He said the Government was committed to protecting Western Australians from bushfires and had joined forces with the Federal Government to boost the State's aerial firefighting resources with additional funding for a second Type 1 water bombing helicopter. The Type 1 is capable of dropping nearly 4,000 litres of water per dump on a bushfire and can carry up to 15 firefighters with their equipment.
