The State Government released the Economic Regulation Authority's (ERA) final report on the inquiry into the benefits and costs of providing shared corporate services in the Western Australian public sector. Finance Minister Simon O'Brien said an implementation committee chaired by the Director General of Finance Anne Nolan will guide the State Government through the decommissioning process. Finance Minister Simon O'Brien announced extensive consolidation of departmental offices as part of the State Government's office accommodation reforms. From June 2012, office accommodation costs to the State Government will be significantly reduced due to the relocation of Government departments from the expensive Perth Central Business District (CBD). Mr O'Brien said the reduced costs are estimated to be $11million per year over the next 15 years - a saving of up to $165million. [ Note: Full screen quality video ] |

Safety and efficiency at the busy intersection of Roe and Great Eastern highways in Midvale will significantly improve with the construction of a new interchange. Transport Minister Simon O'Brien commemorated the start of work on the new interchange by turning the first sod of soil at the official groundbreaking ceremony. Macmahon Contractors Pty Ltd has been awarded a $74million contract to design and construct the new interchange. Mr O'Brien said the new interchange would allow Roe Highway traffic to flow freely by bridge over Great Eastern Highway, significantly improving the integration of connecting traffic. The State Government has announced a $178.8million investment package to bolster Western Australia's grain freight network. Premier Colin Barnett said the funding package would secure the Federal Government's commitment of $135million announced in the 2010-11 Federal budget. With previously committed State funds, it brings the total investment in the grain freight network to $352million over four years. Mr Barnett said farmers and road users would all benefit from the move. "This massive upgrade to the grain freight network will improve the efficiency of grain transport, which will mean lower costs for farmers," he said. [ Note: Full screen quality video ] |

| The proposed Rous Head Harbour marina at Fremantle is likely to include more than 100 boat pens and will also feature cafes, offices and tourism facilities. Transport Minister Simon O'Brien announced expressions of interest had been invited from the private sector for development proposals to create a vibrant new mixed-use marina. | The State Government is upgrading the public transport bus fleet with the signing of a contract potentially worth up to $400million. The contract - for the supply of a minimum 65 buses a year for five years with a five-year option - was awarded to Volvo Group Australia. Announcing the deal today, Transport Minister Simon O'Brien said Volvo would provide the chassis and Volgren Australia would manufacture the bus bodies at their plant in Malaga. "Deliveries to the Public Transport Authority start in July 2011, immediately following the expiration of the previous contract which the previous Coalition Government set in place in 1999," Mr O'Brien said. | Stage 2 of the Lancelin Cervantes project, the final section of Indian Ocean Drive, will officially open to traffic, some nine months ahead of schedule and under budget. In commemorating this major road project, Premier Colin Barnett and Transport Minister Simon O'Brien said the new road would not only significantly improve road connectivity along the central-west coastline but also play an important part in the future development of the region. "The construction of this impressive 56km high-standard road, linking Lancelin to Cervantes, provides a safer, shorter route for tourists and other light vehicle road users, away from the heavy freight traffic on Brand Highway," Mr Barnett said. West Australian commuters will have access to new buses after the State Government today announced it would replace half of the Public Transport Authority's (PTA) Transperth bus fleet. Premier Colin Barnett and Transport Minister Simon O'Brien said the Government's plan to purchase a minimum of 650 buses during the next decade represented a significant commitment to the future of the State's public transport network.

To facilitate this development the State Government will today introduce the 'Railway (Butler to Brighton) Bill 2009' into State Parliament.

Speaking in Bunbury, where the Minister was attending Regional Cabinet, Mr O'Brien said the $40.9million project was scheduled for completion by Christmas.
