Protecting our unique lifestyle and environment

Western Australia’s lifestyle is unique. It’s part of what makes our State a better place to live. That’s why the State Government is acting now to protect it for future generations.

We ended logging in old growth forests, protected Ningaloo Reef and safeguarded more of WA's coastline through the creation of marine parks. In addition, we have created 36 new national parks and nature reserves and made the single biggest addition to our conservation estate in history.

We have completed the Perth to Mandurah railway, providing the burgeoning southern suburbs with a fast, safe, reliable and environmentally friendly transit system direct to the heart of the city and taking an estimated 21,000 cars off the road each day.

And we are tackling climate change in an innovative and practical way.

We're better managing our precious water resources to make Perth one of the most water-efficient cities in the world.

We built Australia’s first large scale desalination plant at Kwinana, with plans for a second 45 gigalitre plant underway.

WA is now recognised as the nation’s leader in water resource management, with Perth being the only major capital city in Australia where people can use sprinklers through summer - despite our driest year on record last year.

The Carpenter Government is investing more than $100million over the next five years on a comprehensive climate change package, including a renewable energy target for the South-West Interconnected System.

We have a tougher environmental watchdog with new laws and more resources to catch and punish polluters. We're bolstering the health of our river system and keeping WA's crops GM free.

We want Western Australia to be one of the most liveable places in the world.

That’s why we are undertaking urban renewal projects and building first-class facilities across the State, including the Perth Arena, the Performing Arts Venue in Northbridge and a $25million upgrade for the Members Equity Stadium.

Important regional renewal projects are also in progress, including the Albany Waterfront and Entertainment Centre, the Bunbury Waterfront Development, the Port Hedland Enhancement Scheme and the Geraldton Foreshore Redevelopment.

The State Government will continue to balance development and the protection of our outstanding environment.
