A fast, safe and affordable transport system
The State Government is bringing our transport system into the future.
The completion of the Government’s New MetroRail project is the State’s biggest ever public infrastructure undertaking in Western Australia, and it almost doubles the size of the Transperth train network.
The project included:
-
Construction of the new 72km long Mandurah Line, including nine above-ground and two underground stations, and twin-bored tunnels under Perth’s CBD;
-
The extension of the Joondalup Line to Clarkson;
-
The spur line to Thornlie; and
-
The acquisition of 31 new three-car state-of-the-art trains and the construction of the Nowergup Depot (train storage, maintenance and cleaning facility).
The expansion of the Transperth rail network, means fewer cars, less traffic and less pollution for our metropolitan area. The 31 new state-of-the-art three-car trains are clean and energy efficient, which is better for the environment and for our expanding city. The new trains have been installed with a regenerative braking system that recycles at least 20 per cent of the electricity produced by the braking action to power the trains.
The new Mandurah Line is expected to provide annual transport for an estimated 15 million passengers and will result in 9.6 million fewer motor vehicle trips per year. It is expected to take 21,000 cars off the Kwinana Freeway each weekday.
Safety and security is paramount and the Public Transport Authority (PTA) operates one of the safest rail systems in the world. Across the network, a sophisticated network of CCTV cameras (1,200 in total) feed live vision to a central monitoring room, which is monitored 24 hours a day seven days a week. All trains and stations have alarmed, round-the-clock surveillance, and incidents are responded to immediately.
The PTA employs more than 200 Transit Officers and security personnel and approximately 100 customer service staff. They work closely with personnel from the Police Rail Unit (PRU), including 50 officers located at the new PRU facility in Rockingham.
SmartRider, Transperth’s new smart card integrated ticketing system, now also means that SmartRider fare gates have been installed at the busier stations on all lines. The fare gates control entry and exit from the stations and lowers fare evasion.
